Health

Background:

The health arm of The Foundation was established in 1987 by Doctor Miriam Navsa and 6 health workers, whose training was arranged by Mustadafin. Students from the Pharmaceutical Department of the University of the Western Cape and two nursing sisters provided additional voluntary assistance.

Mustadafin’s first clinic was situated in the informal settlement of Black City. This clinic is the only one in an area populated with approximately 50 000 people.

The activities undertaken by the clinic are preventative and curative. Here basic medical treatment, education and vaccination programmes are all pursed. Injuries and illnesses vary from burns, gastro-enteritis, and sexually transmitted diseases. Workshops are also presented to inform the public about nutrition, hygiene and family planning. Milk is frequently provided to mothers

Patient at the Foundations Heideveld clinic are charged a very minimal fee to prevent dependency as well as addressing the issues of sustainability.

In Tafelsig, (Mitchells Plain) alone, we see to 1500 infected families with cooked meals twice a day, and provide awareness at the various schools, churches, provide home base care for the terminally ill, gardening, telephonic counseling and support groups which meets regularly and also became the campaigners for awareness in the community.

Khayelitsha as with the above, are provided with feeding, counseling and support including all these areas.  These areas are high in unemployment, gangsterism drugs teenage pregnancy and the spread of sexual transmitted diseases.

Last year we increased our training particularly amongst the youth.  Training them as peer educators and making youth the vocal point of all our programmes.

Mustadafin also supported families and child headed homes by providing counseling assisting with rental, food, clothing education and spiritual guidance via the churches and mosques.

One of our successes stories is the HIV \ AIDS project in Mitchell’s Plain, Tafelsig United Aids Project, which is gradually becoming self-sustainable. Here the Foundation is very involved in capacity building and the projects feeding scheme. Often companies \organizations that needs workshops or HIV \ AIDS education are referred to Tafelsig United Aids Project, which is a sub-structure of Mustadafin Foundation.
