Background:
Fires, tornadoes, floods and wind storms are just some of the disasters that plague the Western Cape and it is often the poorest of the poor who are the hardest hit. Four years ago The Mustadafin Foundation was called upon by the government to assist in disaster relief right across the province from Houtbay to as far a field as Piketber. We accepted the opportunity to expand our helping hand to those in need. Most recently we assisted the community of 14 500 people in Joe Slovo informal settlement with 2 meals a day, blankets and alternative accommodation. The disaster team is ever ready to answer the plea of those hit by catastrophes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Strategic Objectives
Our Strategic Objectives is to improve the house hold environments of families who find themselves homeless due to disaster such as fires, floods and tornadoes, among others, by identifying them as in need of support. This includes people suffering from trauma and who are trying to restructure their lives.
Output/Outcomes
Over the years we have found that our support gives those affected strength to rebuild their homes with a better and stronger foundation and to use their energy more productively. The Disaster team has also committed themselves to train preventatives by engaging in workshops to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats within the community.
