DIRECTORS REPORT Over the past 5 years, we have impacted the lives of thousands of men, women and children. For the Mustadafin Foundation the past year has been a challenging and motivational one on all fronts. Mustadafin Foundation in all its projects has gone through many complications. Many of the projects started off simply but we have encountered that no project is simple. Each one goes through good times, bad times and constantly need to be motivated and upgraded in order to maintain self-sufficiency. Our various projects like pre-school, adult education, feeding scheme, disaster programmes, madressas and training of business initiatives has grown beyond our own expectation. Beside the many activities we are involved in, the year 2001 saw us taking the bull by the horns and we set 25 people in small business, opened a new centre in Khayelitsha, trained 12 people in HIV Aids, created a support group for the children that are undernourished send to us by the day hospital and initiated the friends of Mustadafin. Since Mustadafin establishment in 1986, we concentrated on destitute women and children, but have now moved in working with the building up of families. The need for job creation and employment has made us look at business that was able to assist us in job creation, developing people skills and development. Our task due to poverty has increased in that people have swarmed our office for help so that they could feed their children and families. It seemed we have become and concentrated more on welfare, than on the advancement of education as we have done in the past. With the demand placed on us at our offices the projects that we concentrate on lack support, therefore Mustadafin had to an employ an extra two people. Areas of feeding increased as the demand become more, however we were not always able to do the things we so much want to do which made us feel helpless. The Muslim community in the impoverish communities felt that not enough was being done for them and as a muslim organisation who was actively involved in all the sector of the community, we purchased a house in Delft South and went for funding for a multifunctional centre. This became active in the month of Ramadan (Muslim fasting month) and provided a prayer facility, feeding and education. However feeding was done to the overall community irrespective of the religion or culture. With regards to the overall development of there organisation, the members of the public, social welfare office and the disaster management team. I must say this year our work was overall done with more teamwork and enthusiasm. We have also been approached by various crèches, organisations and members of the public to either support their structure or for guidance in terms of programmes, that Mustadafin is currently running. Some business were keen to expose our work done by the sewing and beading ladies. In fact certain companies showed remarkable interest and we have met with them to expo our work. Our future seems very active as three new projects would be underway and we are proud that through the help of the council and the general public that these project would be completed with the year 2002. We also need to establish a stronger fund-raising programme and with that vision employed a marketing person. A first for the Mustadafin. Also to network closer with the social welfare structures and build a stronger relation with them to adopt our reconstruction and development programme. It is with gratitude that I acknowledge the men, women, children, staff, volunteers and donors both local and national for their support of our organisation, without there help and support we would not be able to accomplice the many activities we involved in. Once again we salute the unsung heroes and heroines who give of their time and have the patients and perseverance to continue the work no matter the danger or the little payment they get.
