Curriculum

If children spend up to 12 hours a day at our educare centres, have you ever wondered what learners do all day at the centres?

Curriculum

We develop the child through the provision of equipment and activities in various rooms/areas of the centre and follow a daily programme timetable. All activities are aimed at development of the whole child (holistic child development) and promotion of life skills and school readiness.

The Mustadafin Foundation subscribes to Carl Rogers’ Experiential Learning Principles:

Freedom to learn

Each child participates at his/her own ability level and progresses at his/her own pace. The programme increases in demand according to the age of the child.

The ‘quiet play’ area:

The class has a book corner and an educational toy area where children learn:

  • To handle books carefully and correctly
  • To love reading and stories
  • About other people and their thoughts and feelings
  • About the world around them and the way it works
  • New words and concepts
  • About color, shape, size and number

The Block area/room

The area has wooden and plastic blocks, small cars, animals and people where children learn: [view pic]

  • Small and large muscle control

  • To solve problems of construction

Art Activities: children develop

  • Creativity and expressive skills
  • Large and small muscles
  • Hand and eye co-ordination

Music and Movement activities the children learn:

  • About the elements of music
  • To move their bodies rhythmically and gracefully
  • To memorise  the words of rhymes and songs

Theme of the week: our work around a theme increases scientific and general knowledge and language skills.

Structures activity time/educational toy time: children learn to sort and match, do puzzles, thread beads, follow a pattern, play board games involving color, shape, number and position in space. All of this is aimed at reading, writing and mathematics.

Food Experience: this activity takes place every second Friday of the month. During this activity the children prepare/work with food in different ways. They learn:

  • About weighing and measuring and counting
  • About various foodstuffs, textures, tastes and smells
  • How ingredients change when they are subjected to different processes

Outdoor activities: We provide climbing apparatus and items for imaginative play. Children develop:

  • Stamina
  • Balance
  • Large muscle control
  • Courage

Water play and sand play: children learn:

  • About the properties of water and sand
  • About volume
  • The meaning of concepts like ‘full’ and ‘empty’

Once a week every group has a structured physical activity time. Every child is seen and his/her ability to run, jump, climb, throw and catch is developed and assessed. We use the existing apparatus, small apparatus and often set up obstacle courses.
