Activities & Mission Statement

What TUAP does:

REGULAR ACTIVITIES:

  • Awareness campaigns: Provide accurate up to date information through interactive workshops, information sessions and acts as a resource centre to those infected/affected with HIV/Aids.
     
  • Education Projects: Training for trainers, to eradicate the stigma around HIV/Aids especially amongst the youth.
     
  • Feeding Scheme: Provides a healthy cooked meal daily for 3500 malnourished people, orphans and children infected/affected with HIV. This is in most cases the only meal some people eat the entire day.
     
  • Sibusiso ready-food project: provide nutritive supplements endorsed by the …… to HIV/cancer patients, children living with disabilities and undernourished children.
     
  • Home Base Care: trained women and nurses from the community conduct home visits to terminally ill people, in order to maintain their dignity and care for infected/affected orphans.
     
  • Support Group: people living with HIV/Aids meet monthly so that those who are diagnosed for the first time with HIV/Aids can disclose of their status because of the relaxed (empathetic) environment.
     
  • Halfway House: a temporary home for kids/orphans infected/affected with HIV until their parents are stable or they find a stable home for them.
     
  • Gardening Project & Sewing project: these are two of our money generating projects as it will help with the feeding scheme and the empowerment of the community.
     
  • Golden Oldies: 40 infected/affected grannies meet weekly for debriefing and relaxation and they receive hot lunch.

SPECIAL ANNUAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Candlelight memorial day: this is celebrated with International Candlelight Memorial Day, in honor of those who passed away due to HIV/Aids and other related illnesses.
     
  • National Women’s Day: TUAP celebrated this day by creating a HIV/Aids awareness platform and recognition program for women who serve the Mitchells Plain community and by honoring their outstanding performances with a debriefing eat n treat.
     
  • Positive Event: this is celebrated annually by providing the opportunity to acknowledge all those living openly with their HIV/Aids status. The aim is awareness, and creating self-acceptance and self-empowerment.

 

MISSION STATEMENT

WHAT: to empower women and youth on Mitchells Plain with the necessary skills to make positive choices towards living a healthy lifestyle and to implement a comprehensive HIV/AIDS and poverty alleviation strategy which seeks to address the ever-increasing pandemic.

HOW: By addressing the misconceptions and stigmatizations surrounding HIV/AIDS among the women, youth and general public in the district through Awareness programmes, education and life-skills, peer support, and encouragement of a nutritional vegetable gardens in each family home

FOR WHOM: The most vulnerable and susceptible group in Mitchells Plain: the women and children.

WHY: Evidence from statistics indicates that there is an increase in HIV infections among women and youth. If we can invest in the enhancement of their health, we will be investing not only in their future, but in the future of the country.
